Aitcha

The name of this family initiative is a Tikuna word that refers to the Golden-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala), a symbol of dawn and purification in our culture.
This species lives in humid and secondary forests, where it feeds on fruits and insects. In addition to its vibrant yellow plumage in males, this species is known for its striking dances to attract females.

Also known as Magüta, it is distinguished by its widespread presence in Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, mainly in the vicinity and banks of the Amazon River.

The Tikuna possess a rich worldview that divides the universe into three levels: the celestial, home to mythical beings; the earthly, inhabited by humans; and the lower aquatic world, home to creatures. This cosmological structure is essential to their rituals and social organization, which is deeply intertwined with the natural environment that surrounds them.

A journey into culture and biodiversity

We are a family-run indigenous initiative from the San Pedro de los Lagos community. Our community is small, with a cheerful, family atmosphere. Activities such as fishing and farming in the chagras are essential in our culture.

The Amazonian Indigenous Network of Birdwatchers and Protectors of Biocultural Knowledge

We are located in the indigenous community of San Pedro de los Lagos in the municipality of Leticia. It is accessible by both river and land, depending on the water level of the Amazon River.
During high water, the community can be reached by boat, navigating the lakes and Yahuarcaca Creek, crossing floodplain forests with whitewater and blackwater.
During low water, access is via a 2.2 km trail.
